Making Art A Daily Practice

It’s been really strange and very liberating for me to make creating art a daily practice.

I originally started with Inktober. Then, after a break, I decided to just keep drawing every day and I haven’t really stopped. I started with drawing because I thought, hey, I could easily commit to 5, 10, 15 minutes a day to draw or paint something. That’s not a big deal. And it really isn’t.

Then, I started an ukulele challenge and just decided to keep playing a little every day. And I haven’t stopped that either. I’m actually learning new techniques as well as music theory. It’s been really good for me.

Then, I thought to myself, if I can commit to drawing and playing the ukulele, then why can’t I write every day too. And here I am, in the middle of a hundred day challenge of writing a piece of flash every day. Of course, some days are better than others. And from these flashes I have written, four of them have been accepted for publication.

All I hope is that after these hundred days are over , I will continue the habit of writing every day. I think that it will be possible if I set myself up for success by preparing daily prompts or goals that I can focus on like I have been for my 100 Days of Flash challenge.

On the other hand, I might need a break because for every acceptance there are tens of rejections that I also have to deal with…it’s never good for the psyche but it’s definitely a part of being a writer.

Here’s to the next sixty-ish days!!
