I was on the fence about applying for the next NEA cycle, because I was wondering if there will even be any money for the arts over the next four years. Then, I found out that the NEA will be prioritizing projects that center the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence - and I was like yeah… definitely not something I want to be a part of…

I have very weird and complex feelings about being Hawaiian and being American but today is not the day to talk about that. Right now, I know that Hawaiians and other native people will suffer and are suffering but I think everyone who is struggling will continue to struggle and it will probably only get worse…

I just hope that we all survive the next four years. I know I live in Japan, but I sill pay taxes, have student loan debts, have belongings in storage, have family and friends living there, vote…

So, all I can do is support people where I can, keep writing and promoting art and literature and giving voice to all that I am able to…because when art is not accessible, I believe we lose hope.
