On Being A Lazy Writer

I envy writers who do research.

I love to read fiction filled with information I know nothing about. That was pretty much my childhood. I read as much as I could and learned so much.

Living on an island in the middle of the Pacific, even with a TV, could still be pretty isolating. I knew, even at a young age, that even though I was reading fiction, I was still reading about people and places, experiences and emotions from actual people.

I don’t do research. At least, I don’t do research for writing. If I am interested in something, I will look online and learn about it (I miss access to good libraries).

I sometimes wonder if this lack of research for my writing is what makes my writing unpublishable. That my laziness is one of my big writing flaws. Should I be adding in more philosophy, more linguistics, more history, more culture?

Should I change my writing style? Should I work towards not being a lazy writer?

I really don’t know. Obviously, what I am doing now is no longer working and the self-doubt can be quite debilitating.

As always, more things to think about…
